I wonder what wonder material they replace plastics with in the future. Sometimes I think of how much plastic is in everything and how entire things (like takeout) would be impractical or at least a lot more difficult without the cheap durability of plastic.
I would like to see standardized glass containers. Pay a deposit for them, keep and use them for as long as you like, bring them back in good condition to any participating restaurants to get your deposit back.
probably still plastic, but highly biodgradable, plus they can easily recycle them using replicators. since most of the microplastic that we absorb, comes from water, containers. trek wouldnt have that problem since it will the replicators recycling it back to ship resources. since when your done eating with utensils, they always put it in the replicators to be recycled.

I agree Discovery is iffy at best, but Lower Decks absolutely counts, damn it!
The first season of Lower Decks alone makes a few very big and weird errors for the sake of causing some story conflict.
For instance; officer replicators adding garnishes to food. Except we’ve always know that the food you create out of a replicator can be programmed to be whatever you like it to be. Any replicator can also be used to generate tools, or weapons.
Which brings me to that other ship that has these newer model tools… And one of the characters stole a bunch of them. Clearly that tool isn’t a classified prototype, otherwise why wouid a low ranking crewman know about it and how would he be able to steal a whole lot of them? So if he really wanted one, why didn’t he just pull up the file in a replicator and just… Replicate one?

If they choose. There’s very likely a fitness and aptitude requirement for serving as an officer in Starfleet. But for civilians… It would be up to them.
They might just think he’s into vintage fashion and had his eyes altered so he didn’t have to damage the antique glasses by replacing the original lenses. It’s not like sick bay couldn’t put his vision right in a few seconds if he wanted to take the glasses off again.

I could imagine there being people who would prefer to not have unnecessary alterations, sort of like there’s a risk with laser surgery on the eyes, it could be a thing of “the safest thing is to just wear glasses and if it gets worse, come back and we’ll look at other options.”
Wouldn’t the first transporter trip filter those out, though?

No. Transporter Chefs tend to be obsessed with filter performance and TTL (Time To Live). They keep turning off all of the “unneeded” filters. If a filter hasn’t caught an issue in the last 100 transfers, it is removed (not commented out, they use “git” to catch those issues.) Eventually issues happen, but that is why they have defense in depth and so many red shirts.
The Federation doesn’t tell you this, but a redundant backup is stored in the buffer for 24hrs just in case of delayed liquifaction.

Yes, odds are almost all of it isn’t plastics. Everybody (capable of reading the paper) knows it, it wasn’t hidden. Still people keep repeating it as a fact, with absolute certainty.

Sure, there are foodies and people not in perfect shape in Star Trek, even on Starships (of the kind that carry civilians, like the Enterprise D).

Just realised when posting; the glasses! Eyesight problems are relatively trivial to fix, unless we’re talking about some extreme case like Geordi.
Geordi had the option to fix his eyes completely but chose to keep the visor because it was better (like he could view different wavelengths and filter stuff and such). I can’t remember if he had that conversion with Q or a starfleet doctor (or both?), but I’m certain it did come up at some point.
Edit: seems everyone who replied is right, plus other instances of advanced alien cultures offering the same thing. He could have just had a recording of his response ready.
Dr. Pulaski offered to replace his eyes with ones that wouldn’t give him a migraine, but he turned them down, because their capabilities weren’t as superhumanly good as his visor, back in TNG’s S2.
He had that conversation with Riker after Q gave him Q powers and it kind of got to his head
Hmm… The time I remember is from Star Trek Insurrection, and he didn’t want his organic eyes because it would come at the cost of the locals they chose to protect.

Well, the visor probably wasn’t seen as a handicap because it also gave Geordi a far wider spectral range of vision.

I think they might be right to be concerned.For once, I’m really interested in the add. I already tried to dodge drinking from plastic bottles by getting a metal one. Except there’s always a plastic cap, I hate that so much.
But you will just end up getting your microplastics from the rain or food you eat.
Any filter is good and better than nothing and a refillable metal bottle is the answer.
That and donate blood. Fear mongering through ads about this product helping save you from microplastic is not it.Sometimes, I fantasize about living in a biosuit.
And yet you would still die all the same in it without ever having smelled flowers and felt rain on your skin.
