We’re all like 1/2 plastic, 1/2 asbestos, 1/2 meaty bits, 97% radioactive at this point.
I wonder what wonder material they replace plastics with in the future. Sometimes I think of how much plastic is in everything and how entire things (like takeout) would be impractical or at least a lot more difficult without the cheap durability of plastic.
I would like to see standardized glass containers. Pay a deposit for them, keep and use them for as long as you like, bring them back in good condition to any participating restaurants to get your deposit back.
probably still plastic, but highly biodgradable, plus they can easily recycle them using replicators. since most of the microplastic that we absorb, comes from water, containers. trek wouldnt have that problem since it will the replicators recycling it back to ship resources. since when your done eating with utensils, they always put it in the replicators to be recycled.
This is how I found out whomp started up again. Today was a good day.
Nobody knows that he comes from the 21st century
Wears glasses
I mean, there were some signs.
Librarian in deleted scene from Insurrection (2375):

Migleemo (2380):

Kovich (3189), although his were apparently explained as a fashion accessory, not vision correction:

Fair point. Migleemo and Kovich definitely both seem like they’re trying for a Vibe, though.
You know who wasn’t?

A deleted scene and two instances of none Starfleet personnel… In NuTrek… Which we all know cares so much about continuity.
I agree Discovery is iffy at best, but Lower Decks absolutely counts, damn it!
The first season of Lower Decks alone makes a few very big and weird errors for the sake of causing some story conflict.
For instance; officer replicators adding garnishes to food. Except we’ve always know that the food you create out of a replicator can be programmed to be whatever you like it to be. Any replicator can also be used to generate tools, or weapons.
Which brings me to that other ship that has these newer model tools… And one of the characters stole a bunch of them. Clearly that tool isn’t a classified prototype, otherwise why wouid a low ranking crewman know about it and how would he be able to steal a whole lot of them? So if he really wanted one, why didn’t he just pull up the file in a replicator and just… Replicate one?
none Starfleet personnel
This isn’t Starship Troopers. Civilians get the same medical care.
If they choose. There’s very likely a fitness and aptitude requirement for serving as an officer in Starfleet. But for civilians… It would be up to them.
They might just think he’s into vintage fashion and had his eyes altered so he didn’t have to damage the antique glasses by replacing the original lenses. It’s not like sick bay couldn’t put his vision right in a few seconds if he wanted to take the glasses off again.
“It’s fine, Doc’ll wave a light over it”
Just tell them you’re allergic to Retinax V, like James T. Kirk.
I could imagine there being people who would prefer to not have unnecessary alterations, sort of like there’s a risk with laser surgery on the eyes, it could be a thing of “the safest thing is to just wear glasses and if it gets worse, come back and we’ll look at other options.”
Wouldn’t the first transporter trip filter those out, though?
Not if the episode plot hinges on them staying
instantly loses 30% of mass
Ozempic got nothing on this Mark IV site to site transporter slaps console
No. Transporter Chefs tend to be obsessed with filter performance and TTL (Time To Live). They keep turning off all of the “unneeded” filters. If a filter hasn’t caught an issue in the last 100 transfers, it is removed (not commented out, they use “git” to catch those issues.) Eventually issues happen, but that is why they have defense in depth and so many red shirts.
The Federation doesn’t tell you this, but a redundant backup is stored in the buffer for 24hrs just in case of delayed liquifaction.
They make a mean omelette though
Microplastics can pass through the umbilical cord. They’re getting through the transporter filter.
Fun fact: the study everyone cites on plastic in the brain almost certainly is overestimating it. Potentially by significant margins. The process they use to dissolve the organic matter can produce insoluble products (what they’re actually weighing as all plastic) from fat. What is a brain mostly comprised of? Fat.
Yes, odds are almost all of it isn’t plastics. Everybody (capable of reading the paper) knows it, it wasn’t hidden. Still people keep repeating it as a fact, with absolute certainty.
Most people are hearing from “news” sources that are saying it as fact with absolute certainty. Even this comic implies it is fact.
That’s why it’s important to share the truth and not shame people for not knowing something they received a lot of misinformation about.
Well, agreed. The shame is entirely on all the news organizations reporting it as a fact.
Not to mention the obesity.
Sure, there are foodies and people not in perfect shape in Star Trek, even on Starships (of the kind that carry civilians, like the Enterprise D).
But outside of maybe admirals, I’ve not seen anyone wearing a Starfleet uniform being obese in Star Trek.
Oh!
Just realised when posting; the glasses! Eyesight problems are relatively trivial to fix, unless we’re talking about some extreme case like Geordi.
Geordi had the option to fix his eyes completely but chose to keep the visor because it was better (like he could view different wavelengths and filter stuff and such). I can’t remember if he had that conversion with Q or a starfleet doctor (or both?), but I’m certain it did come up at some point.
Edit: seems everyone who replied is right, plus other instances of advanced alien cultures offering the same thing. He could have just had a recording of his response ready.
Dr. Pulaski offered to replace his eyes with ones that wouldn’t give him a migraine, but he turned them down, because their capabilities weren’t as superhumanly good as his visor, back in TNG’s S2.
He had that conversation with Riker after Q gave him Q powers and it kind of got to his head
Hmm… The time I remember is from Star Trek Insurrection, and he didn’t want his organic eyes because it would come at the cost of the locals they chose to protect.
What if you are allergic to retinox5?
(giggle is nerdom)
Thank you for saving me from having to look up Kirk’s allergy. It was going to bug me all day, otherwise.
since STARFLEET is based of the military, they would have some medical and weight standards too. they never had a crippled, or handicapped ensign before. maybe as admiral you are doing less its possible.’
geordi eventually got REAL eyes later on, instead of the silly visor.
Well, the visor probably wasn’t seen as a handicap because it also gave Geordi a far wider spectral range of vision.
The blue eyes he got later on weren’t real eyes, though. Just more advanced cybernetic implants.
I mean, O’Brien is my favorite character in Trek but he ain’t exactly slim and trim…
Yeah but he’s downright skinny when you accound for his diet
Fair point. Lots of potatoes….
the genii took care of him, and died in a glorius atomic explosion.
He’s not overweight either.
Scotty only made it to captain
Scotty probably lost his former exercise time when he took on Chief Engineering Officer responsibilities
Being trapped in a teleporter pattern buffer for a few decades also wasn’t very helpful.
Oh, that’s because Rick Berman is a fatphobic and misogynist piece of shit. He wouldn’t let Troi wear a Starfleet uniform until she lost weight.
Jankom Pog and Rok-Tahk are Starfleet officers in New Trek who have a wider build.
Or maybe because serving as an officer has a fitness requirement, as is expected in any fleet or navy?
Oh no! The ship needs crucial repairs, the conduit is down this Jefries tube! Quick, before the ship explodes! Except you can’t fit and everyone dies.
NuTrek is garbage in any regard, and this would be something else to add to the ever growing NuTrek garbage pile.
So you’re gonna tell the giant rock lady she needs to lose weight because she can’t fit in a jeffries tube?

Does her species even store energy as fat? I ask because you’re clearly claiming expertise in this subject.
Giant rock little girl is a NuTrek invention, and NuTrek fucks so much shit up due to incompetence combined with trying to earn brownie points, while simultaneously playing it super safe.
I will disregard NuTrek in its entirety, and any argument based on NuTrek is illegitimate.
Ha! (The situation we live in is concerning and the ramifications are unquantifiable because it will be impossible to get suitable control subjects for comparison studies)

This is a legitimate ad I got…
I think they might be right to be concerned. For once, I’m really interested in the add. I already tried to dodge drinking from plastic bottles by getting a metal one. Except there’s always a plastic cap, I hate that so much.
But you will just end up getting your microplastics from the rain or food you eat.
Any filter is good and better than nothing and a refillable metal bottle is the answer.
That and donate blood. Fear mongering through ads about this product helping save you from microplastic is not it.Sometimes, I fantasize about living in a biosuit.
And yet you would still die all the same in it without ever having smelled flowers and felt rain on your skin.
We can try to avoid what makes us sick but I wouldn’t at the cost of experiencing the world.
Oh I forgot about this comic. Nice to be reminded.
Is this a series about him? I want to read about 21st century stowaway
I can not tell at which point the Star Trek arc started, but the last several comics that I checked on the artist’s website are Trek-themed like this.
Thank you!
Found the start of the arc: https://www.whompcomic.com/comic/star-dreck
After reading the whole thing, I’m slightly worried about the creator
