He won the primary, he hasn’t quite won the seat yet but in NYC it’s typically a guarantee that the dem nominee will win, though it might be a bit closer with this guy because of the big money against him.
He got further than Sanders on a significantly further left platform.
No more half measures. That is the lesson from all this.
He also seems more down to talk shit about the fucking ghouls around him, which Sanders never did.
The US appears majority right-wing and the government has many fascists but most people aren’t represented by any politician and so don’t really engage, aside from checking the boxes of who they have been told are on their side. Actual socialist policies are helpful and people can see that, even US conservatives when they aren’t just parroting the talking points from the pundits. But especially in a city like NYC, Trump called it an ‘Anarchist Jurisdiction’ in 2020 and that’s ridiculous but there is some truth to the revolutionary potential.
And for the doomers, even if he doesn’t win, we had him on TV talking about being a socialist and describing his platform to great applause, and we embarassed the Democrats effort to defeat him in the primary, showing how popular our politics are. The struggle is, itself, valuable.
100%. It’s the reason why PSL ran a candidate despite obviously knowing they won’t win the election. It boosted their numbers by a lot apparently after Trump won because people were looking for a path to organizing away form the genocidal Dems and heard about them from that Claudia lady running for President.
Run more socialists locally! Get our platform and beliefs out there and in the mainstream. Make Chris Matthews shit his pants in fear.
Totally agree we need more socialists running locally, but that’s not what the PSL does or did.
Difference between Mamdani’s and Claudia’s campaigns is that Mamdani was actually trying to win the office he ran for and may pull it off. It’s not just PR or advertisement. So far he’s only won the primary but, I agree, that in itself and the attention he’s getting is worth it. PSL’s Presidential campaigns are not even close to being in this kind of spotlight at scale or even close to clinching any states, perhaps even any localities. Of course, if they had base support in areas built off successful local campaigns that could potentially be a different story. I hope, hope, hope that PSL finally does start running local campaigns but you have to give it to DSA for another candidate they supported and worked for getting a win.
I talk a lot of shit about DSA but they are much better in this regard.
