I want to stop using Google translate app to translate text in pictures I take, which is something I often need to do while traveling abroad. Do you guys have any foss app recommendations? Or maybe a website?
Hey for android there is an app, Imagetoolbox. It can do a lot, not just identify text from image. I’ve tried and it accurately give me the text all the time. Give it a try. https://github.com/T8RIN/ImageToolbox
Just tried it, as I already had it downloaded for image manipulation and didn’t know about this feature
Works really reasonable well
The app is constantly getting updated so new features are added to it as well. Its a decent image editor with a lot of extra features. We doesn’t have to get multiple apps. Like a toolkit app for image.

Translate you. And then add sources.
It seems impossible to find one. Even only a good foss translator that isn’t relying on google or deepl to translate sentences. I’m using Mistral Le chat so far for translation (not foss but not too evil) to avoid google and it’s pretty good but can’t deal with photos or live camera. My best hope in the future is a good AI privacy focused that could work locally without network or only to gather information without sharing mine.
