It seems like the only thing the state has been successful with is instigating infighting through the whole “tankie” vs “anarkiddie” sectarian split. If I’m being charitable, gender has been pretty useful for them too with how many people feel comfortable with the anti-trans-athlete culture war BS. But if they knew what they were doing, there’d be so much more they could do.
I guess the reason they don’t pull out all the stops is that the western left is nonexistent but geez, at least taunt us about China not doing anything to save us or whatever.

If they hallucinate some bizarro bullshit, we have to divert from our talking points to address whatever brainworm nonsense they are peddling before being able to express what we originally intended.
This allows them to set the narrative and puts us on the defense instead of the other way around.
Notice how little time we spend actually convincing libs of Marxian economics, dialectical materialism, and democratic centralism and compare that to how much time we’re relitigating if China has concentration camps for Uighur muslims or if Stalin intentionally tried to starve Ukrainians.

synthesis: Anticommunist propaganda has never had to try very hard in the English-speaking world for many reasons. 1) They are able to say whatever they want without pushback in most cases, because most communist countries don’t produce a counter-narrative in English. 2) A large portion of the English-speaking world reside in the imperial core and benefit greatly from capitalism, and therefore will not closely interrogate pro-capitalist motivated reasoning. 3) When all else fails, the states of imperial countries have moved in and prevented successful English-speaking communist movements from being successful by other means ie assassination and sabotage.
This is why I tickle myself when I do the bit about a chauvinist communist in a well-established communist society.

Historically the only group that I think has ever actually been good at anticommunism were the trots. They were so good at it they turned themselves into neocons.

Part of the point of anti com propaganda is the terrible quality. If you teach everyone from a young age absurd, unrealistically and insultingly stupid ideas about your enemies, they will no longer be living in reality. Their experience of what they have been told about the world will be so far removed from how anything actually happened that they won’t ever be able to connect back to reality. They won’t be able to actually spot patterns of behaviour in their own leadership and capitalist class, and will be completely unable of understanding what to do about it in the slim chance they do notice something is horrifically wrong. Look at all the “left lib” types who understand something is wrong, but are so indoctrinated that they can’t even imagine a world without capitalism, at best they can imagine a world where the boot of capital doesn’t press down as hard on them specifically.
I’d say that the functional nonexistence of the western left is evidence that anticommunists are, in fact, very good at propaganda.
I think it really isn’t about propaganda. They didn’t defeat Hampton or the Ferguson people with propaganda. When capital loses the argument, they just shoot you.
