TrueAnon’s pretty good but it hinges on whether you like Brace’s humor (I do). despite being ML they do not really bring up class often or do much class analysis along with the humor the way CTH did when it was firing on all cylinders. it is nice to have a podcast that hates the bourgeois and Musk and Thiel and Trump with a burning fire though

thanks, that’s a good rec, i live in the UK and used to enjoy it. However they’re all so incredibly posh and i got into an argument with november on twitter a while ago and i can’t stomach listening to it since then unfortunately. also that ep of Britainology where they reviewed the Top Gear US episode and the American was whining so much about their light ribbing of the US south was super annoying.

It’s remarkable how wrong November is consistently but she’s funny enough that nobody cares, apparently. Tuned her out after she was supporting HTS taking over Syria and calling Rania Khalek a doomer.

QAnon Anonymous (QAA) is my vote for funny podcast about the present day insanity

        all so incredibly posh

Yeah, the constant referencing of classical history is amusing in that “look at this in-group signalling they can’t help themselves but make” kinda way, but then it gets kinda… sad when they start talking quite confidently about the working class experiences of life in the UK and they clearly have no relation to it whatsoever. That’s mostly on the Britainnology side.

The train guy they have on is good - his podcast Railnatter is pretty interesting, and quite focused on Train Stuff.

They are the closest for me to the vibe of early trapo. Also can’t recall which guy, but one of the Brit’s in that show does hilarious impressions. The cast the net wide enough that I don’t find the otherwise British focus to be a downside.

trueanon is usually good. Their more focused episodes r a treat and well researched. lately they’ve been shooting from the hip. i would say to hear them at their best you gotta listened to the series like 9/11, The Game, keep the dream alive, etc.

the worst of all possible worlds - there’s an undercurrent of criticism about american evangelicalism (particularly the adventures in odyssey episodes) if you’re into that, but they also cover a range of media including films, tv, video games etc.

I’m not all the way through it, but I thought the last episode was pretty good. He’s literally doing democratic socialism, saying that democracy needs to be extended to the workplace and the economy generally.

Obviously, I’m not a demsoc, but I think it’s good for them to have more of a voice when they aren’t attacking more radical leftists (which he didn’t as far as I saw).

You’re talking about promotional material when I am telling you that I listened to the actual interview and you are wrong with your vibe check. He said that he finds it credible that the first American Revolution was the Civil War and that even with the subsequent progress made by various suffrage movements, even by Athenian standards, American “democracy” is aristocratic and performative (and it’s his core argument that America is not a democracy!)

Yeah, I think a basic mistrust of someone who writes for the Guardian (etc.) is a reasonable place to start at, I just don’t think Chapo would have on a DNC ghoul to pitch their audience on “107 Days” and instead thought that this guy’s takes on how America is not a real democracy and we should make it a real democracy were worth sharing, even if he’s more libbed up than we are in many ways (though the way that he spoke about workplace democracy and such makes me think he’s at least a solid demsoc). I also agree with you that some of the pandering wordings were gross, but to put it in context it might be worth revisit Frederick Douglass’s “The Meaning of the Fourth of July to the Negro,” where he starts off with pages of jerking off the Founders but then excoriates them and everyone else in a way completely unheard of in modern America’s mainstream political discourse. It’s at least true that the demonic Founders were somewhat progressive in their revolution for their opposition to monarchy and opposition to explicit, codified theocracy, and I think it’s fair enough to recognize things like that so long as you maintain the context of slavery, opposition to “unfettered” democracy, patriarchy, etc.

Yeah I was listening to this ep while running errands and found it interesting if not humorous. Useful little bits to use against liberals who think their vote might be defending democracy.

nah it’s the most recent ep with Osita Nwanevu, who is a contributing editor at The New Republic and a columnist at The Guardian according to his website. book’s tagline is “Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding” which sounds like some dull constitution-worshipping shit. having Sirota on was completely awful too. i listened to Chapo for slop not for book promotional interviews.

back in the golden age when Matt’s sword of verbal fire was unbroken, you could tell the episodes with bad guests because Matt would either not show up or only say one or two sentences the whole episode

contributing editor at The New Republic and a columnist at The Guardian

why should anyone want to amend the American constitution at all, can we fix israel by “radically amending the basic law” too?

Democratic socialists are a benefit to socialism generally if they are arguing from a standpoint of material empowering working people, which this guy is. Either they succeed in making their reforms, and people are empowered, or they fail and radicalize people, as we saw happen with Bernie – who was critical in the political awakenings of a whole generation of people who now rightly view him as too conservative.

Communists seriously should run for elected office, on campaigns of making radical changes that are allowed by existing legal frameworks – and the US Constitution especially formally allows for really any change. They cannot “fix” America, but they can benefit us nonetheless. Read Marx, he says the same thing.

i went and had a further look at the book:

“Nearly two hundred fifty years ago, the men who founded America made a fundamental break not just from their old country but from the past—casting off an order that had subjugated them with worn and weak ideas for the promise of true self-governance and greater prosperity in a new republic,” Nwanevu writes. “With exactly their sense of purpose and even higher, more righteous ambitions for America than they themselves had, we should do the same now—work as hard as we can in the decades ahead to ‘institute new Government’ for the benefit of all and not just the few.”

lmao praising the slaveowning founding fathers and their “righteous ambitions for america” is not it

    Cumtown -

Yes, I know, some clips are understandably of too poor taste for some people, but stuff like Liberal Elmo, or Montgomery Gentry (about new Country Music and anti woke people hating on Starbucks for some reason) really cut to the heart of our incredibly stupid and infantile political climate. You can find plenty of clips on YouTube.

Also, hearing them dumbly rip the piss out of Andrew Cuomo, Joe Biden, Ben Shapiro and so on, mercilessly and without taking them seriously at all - e.g doing an impression of Trump talking about Robert Deniro being gay while 9/11 is being reported - I know it’s ‘bad’, but it’s so absurd and irreverent that it feels very fitting for the times.
