I know someone that thinks tankies are allies against American imperialism, and they say that any movement to the left is better than capitalism, even if it’s Russia or CCP branded leftism. They say that nothing that Russia or CCP has done is worse than what American imperialism. This all came up after I mentioned the tankie triad, and they said they were subscribed to multiple communities on there and didn’t disagree with what they were seeing on there. Let me know if there’s a better place to ask or if there’s any other threads or resources I should refer them to. I will be forwarding this thread to them, so your help would be greatly appreciated.
take them out to a nice dinner and talk about what local orgs you both would want to get involved with. People learn a lot more from real life political action than being given a list of links.
People rarely change their minds about things they believe when directly confronted. Its seen as an attack and makes them defensive and more certain in their ideas.
They have to learn for themselves that they are wrong to change their mind. You can steer them in that direction. Appear genuinely interested and ask leading questions. Subtly guide them into having to confront the contradictions in their own beliefs.

This person thinks that Russia isn’t capitalistic and is somehow “left”, kinda sounds like they’re already a tankie. It’s going to be almost impossible to talk them out of that.
Maybe start with trying to directly engage with the statement, so like make a list of what American imperialism has done and compare it to a list of what the Russian Federation or China has done in other countries.
You could also look at how many trans people are murdered in each country.
Or something like homeownership rate

Yeah. grad and hexbear are rather toxic, with .ml being a mixed bag. All three instances are infamous for being filled with authoritarians referred to derogatorily as tankies by other socialists and anarchists.
