The idea is that he could have, but it was through his suffering that mankind would be saved. I’m not a believer but from a literary perspective, the story is that if he saved himself, all humanity would suffer. His human nature wanted to survive and avoid suffering but to do so would go against God’s will and humanity would not be absolved of sin. He overcame his human nature to embrace the will of God. Hence his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will”
By the way, the nails actually go through the wrists in crucifixion, between the bones (radius and ulna). If you put the nails through the palms like they so often show, the weight of the body would just make them rip through the meat of the hands between the fingers.
Right, but God could have just not created him in the first place. The entire plan to send himself to earth as a human is insanely convoluted and makes no sense when you’re literally all powerful.
God works in mysterious ways, amiright?
Yeah exactly, the ultimate cop out response haha
Well, that’s why I look at it solely from a literary perspective. The whole idea of creating mankind, while knowing the whole future of everyone who will ever exist, and then punishing humanity because one of the very first people created failed to obey his rules, something God knew they would do, is simply absurd. But as a story it’s interesting.
The whole premise of the God in the Bible makes little sense. To quote Epicurus:
Omnipotence, Omniscience, Benevolence. Choose any two.
Sure, but there are tons of interesting stories. I’m not going to base my life on any of them
Oh, I didn’t mean to suggest one should. I fully agree with you. I was just discussing the text.
I wonder how much trial and error went into figuring out the ideal nail placement.
