They are literally just putting up a front to look like they will eventually federate while never actually delivering and people are falling for it. The vast majority of their users has no clue about what federation is and wont wont learning anything from falling into their trap. Its just another iteration in the cycle. The best we can hope for is that people get accustomed to jumping ship more aggressively.

He very clearly did not approve of Bluesky. He wrote that it is fundamentally doomed unless changes are made. He wrote about some things that bluesky does well but noted that these all pale in comparison to the big issue of not being federated.

The snippet you quoted is not not an endorsement but a criticism. Saying that a platform requires millions in investment to meet baseline is not an endorsement.

But Mastodon has one feature that Bluesky sorely lacks – the federation that imposes antienshittificatory discipline on companies and offers an enshittification fire-exit for users if the discipline fails. It’s long past time that someone copied that feature over to Bluesky.
