technology@hexbear.net•Why Does A.I. Write Like … That?English
1·8 days agoThanks for taking the time to explain. Having read your comment, and thinking some more, I guess I can see how the thing not learning what you would ideally want it to learn (i.e. writing “good”) and it just mimicking superficially what good quality writing looks like fits the definition of overfitting.
I guess I’m not expecting it to even be able to do this though, like what I expect from the thing is exactly to produce some shallow mimicry. I’m actually impressed it managed to figure out these superficial things. Learning the em dash is associated with quality isn’t wrong, you would want it to learn that.
Also, if the training data is tagged, would it stop doing the em dash if the correct tags (“email”, “reddit”, …) were used in the prompt?

technology@hexbear.net•Why Does A.I. Write Like … That?English
6·8 days agoIs this actually overfitting though, like technically? I thought ‘overfitting’ is when the thing just spits out the training data back at you verbatim, like it has memorized it exactly. How does it preferring em dashes instead of – or whatever indicate overfitting really, wouldn’t that indicate the opposite, i.e. successful generalization? They fed it a bunch of books and articles with — and a bunch of emails and reddit comments with – or - and it turned that into a general preference for the em dash regardless of context.
Maybe I’m missing something here, but I think the author just uses the word ‘overfitting’ incorrectly.

askchapo@hexbear.net•Why was Ukraine considered a "red line" for Russia, but not the other NATO countries on its border?English
34·12 days agoProbably because if one were to invade Russia (and how Russia was actually invaded in the past), it would be through Ukraine. Attacking Russia through Finland is a logistical nightmare, you just couldn’t supply a big offensive force through there. The Baltic states are a tiny countries, easily dealt with; can’t put an army there that’s large enough not to be overrun by Russia.
Ukraine is large, flat, the borderline is massive, the population of Ukraine is substantial. Turning Ukraine into bulwark against Russia, allied with NATO, is massively worse than all the other border countries. You can see how much trouble Russia has in this war dealing with just the Ukrainian army, imagine if there was a multi-million NATO force fighting there.

14·14 days agoThe vast majority of scenes, details, plot points, “stuff” (both the stuff it points to >>>this is important<<< and the more subtle stuff) just do not strike me is fitting into the theory that this is trying to make some anticommunist point.
This is a concept show, everything must be assumed to be there for a reason. If a theory about what the message is here doesn’t explain most of the scenes, it’s probably wrong.

12·15 days agoI mean good on you for quitting, I didn’t get to Radiance because I quit even earlier after being unable to beat Lost Kin. I do not regret having quit the game when I did, and I had a good time with it.
I played it again years later, and beat Radiance then. These are my feelings about that experience:
Radiance probably took me at least a dozen times. After a while I became quite consistent at beating the Hollow Knight, with full health and all. When originally he felt quite relentless, he now began to feel slooow. I started to get more hits in, really spammed high damage spells, every phase only taking a couple of seconds. That fucker gave me all kinds of trouble but now I’m whooping his ass! Only takes a minute too. Anyway, that was some satisfying feeling of empowerment or whatever you want to call it, and I reckon that’s why the devs made me play that bit over and over again, and I thank them for that.

food@hexbear.net•Sauerkraut and things of that natureEnglish
1·19 days agoYeah it’s probably fine. On my funky batch, the head was sitting around a bit before I used it. Looked fine but just slightly less crispy. The sauerkraut smelled not totally unlike kimchi, less strong though, or maybe you could say there was a hint of farts and beer or something like that. Not exactly unpleasant, just unusual. My best guess is that some yeast started to do its thing but was then snuffed out by the acid, but idk I’m not an expert.
Edit: There’s a brand of salt-fermented pickles here, which for some reason they then put in vinegar (why?), which also has a similar farty smell. Pretty strong actually, not a fan.
Maybe it’s just that I’m used to white cabbage sauerkraut, and associate red cabbage with the traditional recipe around here (“Blaukraut”), where you take the fresh shredded red cabbage and boil it very soft, with onions and sugar and often apples. Still the fact that white cabbage is the only sauerkraut you can buy makes me think that white cabbage sauerkraut is pretty universally preferred.

2·19 days agoI had one batch of sauerkraut that smelled pretty funky but was normal consistency-wise, and I ate it and it was fine, maybe the funkiness even add something to it. But usually it just comes out smelling sour and not very funky. Definitely something other than lactobacteria was growing in that batch.
Also did red cabbage sauerkraut once and while it is good and interesting and cannot be bought anywhere, I still prefer white.

technology@hexbear.net•Microsoft confesses that File Explorer loads too slow in Windows, plans to enable preload to make it open fasterEnglish
4·19 days agoHaving the desktop icons and the file manager view run the same code makes perfect sense. You would want both of those things to look and behave the same.
Putting a web browser into your file manager, on the other hand, is totally unnecessary. Those are completely different things.
Gnome never did integrate a web browser into Nautilus. KDE did though, not sure if that’s still there. It was some modular thingy of course, so there’s still some separation there. I’m assuming Microsoft also did it kinda like that, they just pretended it’s totally integral in their legal defense. KDE did just because Windows did it, of course.

technology@hexbear.net•Microsoft confesses that File Explorer loads too slow in Windows, plans to enable preload to make it open fasterEnglish
13·20 days agoI mean back in the day when Gnome had desktop icons, Nautilus did draw those. So the file manager was, in fact, started before you could see your desktop. Windows did the same thing I’m pretty sure, I’m kind of surprised that the article seems to imply it doesn’t anymore. Maybe it’s now just sort of a component dll, and the fully featured file explorer loads a bunch more crap.
KDE, XFCE etc. would also need to do one of those things.

Games@hexbear.net•Valve confirms Steam Machine will be priced ‘like a PC with the same level of performance’English
12·21 days agoSomeone in one of these video (might have been Linus Tech Tips) made the point that if they subsidized that thing people might just buy them as office PCs or otherwise unrelated to gaming, which would be a problem because they’d be losing money and presumably supplies are limited. Still think it would be smart to sell it at cost just to fuck the competition, it’s not like this makes any dent in their profits, which are ridiculous.
Might still sell okay at 700-800$, there’s probably some people that need an upgrade or some console gamers that want to get into PC gaming, and it’s cuter and easier than building your own PC.

45·21 days agoWadephul talks about a big success for Europe
German Foreign Minister Wadephul has described the Geneva talks on Ukraine as a major step forward in terms of taking European interests into account. Speaking on Deutschlandfunk radio, the CDU politician said that the concerns of the European Union and Ukraine had been heard in the negotiations with the US. The US would involve Europe in a possible peace solution in Ukraine, he added. dlf
So they’re negotiating with
RussiaRubio, who is letting them change the “peace plan” back to the old frozen conflict proposal, which the Russians already rejected. I guess in their minds that is a great success because they figure (1) Trump continues support, (2) ???, (3) victory! In unrelated news (as the Europeans seem to think), Russia is advancing at the fastest pace since the beginning weeks of the invasion, they have conquered Pokrovsk and Kupiansk, have reportedly encircled Ukrainian troops in both of those fronts, are advancing in Zaporizhzhia where they have entered Hulyaipole (another logistical hub), and are also pushing Siversk in a move towards Slovyansk. Ukraine clearly doesn’t have the manpower to man all these fronts properly. Oh and some Ukrainian MP said more than 500k dead and as many wounded.
So good job sabotaging the peace talks while there are still Ukrainians left that can be sent to their deaths.

9·1 month agoJust a heads up: This thing will not work for watching streaming services in anything but terrible quality, and I don’t expect this to be fixed with a software update either. This is true for any Linux (except Android if you count that).
I have seen some misleading media coverage where journalists think this will work in the browser. It will not.
The DRM stuff demanded by the content industry doesn’t exist, as it would presumably be too easy to circumvent in an open source OS. There is a basic level widevine DRM included in official Firefox/Chrome for Linux, but last time I checked Netflix will only give you at best 720p with this, Amazon Prime gives you some bitrate-starved 480p.
And no, there is no workaround for this except piracy.

4·1 month agoSomeone from Valve mention FEX in the Gamer’s Nexus video, so that must be it. Also Digital Foundry quoted someone from Valve as saying that “it’s the start of SteamOS for ARM, and they were excited to bring PC content to ARM devices in the gaming world.”
Somewhere in one of these videos they said that the emulation has about 20% CPU overhead, but I can’t find that exact quote right now.
So that sounds pretty promising I’d say.
