  • I can count to ten in English (native), Japanese (did Karate for about a decade) and Spanish (took classes in middle and high school).

I can … read and listen to Spanish and maybe understand at about a 2nd or 3rd grade level… very much out of practice.

I would not say I can speak Japanese or understand it … basically at all, unless the conversation entirely consists of either counting, or using nouns describing Karate forms, lol.

The first time I dated … a combination weeabo and owns her own horses, horse girl, who was actually taking Japanese in college to major in it…

She asked me a very grammatically basic question in Japanese, a yes no question…

And I responded ‘Osu!’… and then quickly learned that that is not a standard Japanese word for ‘yes’, that would be ‘Hai’, and that Osu … basically only contextually makes sense in the context of a dojo or some other sports/military type setting.

Apparently in proper/normal? Japanese it is a casual greeting amongst martial arts practitioners… but I was literally drilled to say it as an enthusiastic, affirmative response to any command.

EDIT: Also, this will sound insane, but I swear to god this actually happened: Many years after the aforementioned clarification from my at the time gf… I later encountered a man who told me he was … a yakuza, specifically a yakushi… we chatted for hours, he showed me how one of his fingers had been severely busted at the knuckle.

He explained to me that… there had been a fuckup on his part, but his… direct superior decided to basically accept some of the blame for the fuckup of this guy I met, and struck him with the blunt side of the blade instead of the sharp side… and then exiled him.

Which was why he was in America, and could no longer safely return to Japan.

Anyway, he explained to me that the reason why… most Japanese say ‘yon’ instead of ‘shi’ to mean ‘4’ … is because ‘shi’ is also the character/sound that… basically means ‘death’.

Which then circled around to why he referred to himself as a ‘yakushi’.

As he explained it to me, it meant that he had both dealt, and been sparred from death.

… I have no idea if what this guy was saying is actually true, if he actually was a yakuza… but he did tell me these things and seem very serious about them.

  • It is astonishingly easy to get basically any LLM to output a simple iteration from one to ten function in all of those languages, and more.

    Here’s Assembly:

newline db 0xA ; Newline character

    section .bss
number resb 1 ; Reserve a byte for the number

    section .text
        global _start

    _start:
        mov ecx, 1 ; Start with 1
        mov edx, 10 ; End with 10

    loop_start:
cmp ecx, edx ; Compare ecx with edx
jg loop_end ; If ecx > edx, jump to loop_end

        ; Convert number to ASCII
add ecx, '0' ; Convert number to ASCII
mov [number], ecx ; Store the ASCII value in number

        ; Print the number
        mov eax, 4 ; sys_write system call
mov ebx, 1 ; File descriptor 1 is stdout
mov ecx, number ; Pointer to the number
mov edx, 1 ; Number of bytes to write
        int 0x80 ; Call kernel

        ; Print newline
        mov eax, 4 ; sys_write system call
mov ebx, 1 ; File descriptor 1 is stdout
mov ecx, newline ; Pointer to the newline character
mov edx, 1 ; Number of bytes to write
        int 0x80 ; Call kernel

sub ecx, '0' ; Convert ASCII back to number
inc ecx ; Increment the number
jmp loop_start ; Jump back to the start of the loop

    loop_end:
        ; Exit the program
        mov eax, 1 ; sys_exit system call
xor ebx, ebx ; Exit code 0
        int 0x80 ; Call kernel

    Here’s FORTRAN

    program iterate_from_one_to_ten
        implicit none
        integer :: i

        ! Loop from 1 to 10
        do i = 1, 10
            print *, i
        end do
    end program iterate_from_one_to_ten

    Here’s COBOL

    PROGRAM-ID. IterateFromOneToTen.

    ENVIRONMENT DIVISION.

    DATA DIVISION.
    WORKING-STORAGE SECTION.
        01 WS-Counter PIC 9(2) VALUE 1.

    PROCEDURE DIVISION.
        PERFORM VARYING WS-Counter FROM 1 BY 1 UNTIL WS-Counter > 10
            DISPLAY WS-Counter
        END-PERFORM.

        STOP RUN.

  • A foot like this is a blend of decorative and functional, imo.

You end up with more surface area than if you had just gone with a straight column, and that helps with stability, slightly lessens the pressure.

Many modern tables or desks have… much less ornate footpad type structures, if the thing itself is quite heavy, or intended to hold a decent amount of weight.

Of course… I have no way of knowing if this old… desk? table? whatever it is, was intentionally designed with that in mind, but the function is still there, at least to some degree.

  • Do you know if there are significant differences between the Korean language of North Korea, and the Korean language of South Korea?

Or are they still very similar?

I only really know one word in Korean… I would sound it out as ’ gam zeh hah mee da '.

I asked some local, older aged, shop owners of South Korean descent how to say ‘thank you’ in Korean so I could thank them with more respect when I shop at their stores… I may be pronouncing or spelling my pronunciation wrong.

Apoarently it is 감사합니다 in Korean… but that is likely South Korean, and it seems that South Korean and North Korean use different words, or pronounciations, for at least some terms…

It would be interesting to learn if there are more differences between the two forms of Korean. :D

  • This is not a normal kind of human interaction, on the girl’s part.

It very strongly indicates she is a spoiled brat, a narcissist.

If you think this kind of interaction is normal… well I see two possible explanations:

You are also a narcissist and that’s why you think this is normal.

    OR

You are surrounded by narcissists who have gaslit you into thinking this is normal, and you haven’t had too many regular interactions with non narcissists.

Also, I don’t see anywhere near as many total upvotes for ‘she’s into you dude, frost that cupcake!’ as I do for ‘this is the biggest red flag imaginable, let me write a short essay explaining why’

In fact, yeah, I don’t see a single comment advocating the anon dive into her… affairs, over this.

  • I literally had this scenario play out when I was pre-school age, in a day care due to parents having nonsense work schedule, no bus service to pre-school.

It was ‘nap time’ and I sat in my little floor mat spot… with a book, reading it.

Had multiple staff come over and tell me that ‘You can’t read, you’re lying, you’re just flipping the pages to be bothersome.’

… By the time I was in second grade, I read so well and so routinely finished my classwork rapidly, that the school would assign me to 4th and 5th graders who were behind on their reading skills, and we’d sit outside of the classroom in the hallway, and I’d help them read through short kids books, help them pronounce words, define them.

  • I didn’t go into in the main post but yeah, US domestic air travel is down as well, which is a pretty good indicator domestic tourism is also down.

… Also, they want to just generally raise the sales tax, with the idea that this will mostly tax tourists.

But… theres no actual … mechanism, to differentiate between a local resident sales tax and an out of state or international tourist sales tax.

… So what they want to do is bail out the already wealthier property owners, on the backs of the already poor non property owners, who pay much more of their income toward sales taxes than to property taxes.

It is literally rob the poor to prop up the idiot home and condo owners and corporations with mortgages they can’t afford because they thought the housing bubble would never pop.

  • Quite literally, as this is going on, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida is trying to convince everyone in the state that it would be a really good idea to just… massively reduce, if not entirely get rid of property taxes… and base government revenue off of higher sales taxes… on tourists.

    https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2025/04/01/ron-desantis-sales-property-tax-relief-florida-homeowners-plan/82753401007/

Florida is … almost certainly the US state with the highest proportion of its economy/tax revenue … tied to tourism.

I struggle to comprehend this level of stupidity, to the point that I am more inclined to believe DeSantis is just trying to make himself king of a rapidly economically declining and literally sinking fiefdom.

Agriculture and fishing? scared all the immigrants away.

    Tourism? tanking.

    Property values? also tanking.

Property insurance? fleeing the state, no more mortgages.

Uh uh what do what do?

    Tax break!

If Dems get the epithet ‘tax and spend’, Reps get the epithet ‘Slash and burn’.

    What a fucking moron.

  • Ah ok, I did get the insulin/glucagon thing wrong.

In my defense, her speech was quite slurred… and I didn’t / don’t have diabetes or regularly care for someone who does.

(Sadly, she ghosted me a few weeks later. Months later I ran into a mutual friend who explained to me she was so embarassed by the whole thing she just… bailed.)

But ok, I’m glad that you also find it odd that she had no idea to use sugar to… manage a low sugar situation… when she’d had diabetes for about a decade up till that point.

  • Ok so disclaimer, this isn’t … as derisive or as … disdianful as something like ‘I can’t believe I had to explain to a 27 yo that chocolate milk does not come from brown cows’ but… here goes:

About a decade ago I went on a movie date with a girl (in an actual theatre, before netflix existed… god maybe it was closer to two decades fuxk)

…30 minutes into the movie, she started going into a diabetic shock.

Before she almost entirely feinted, she told me what was going on, and was freaking out because she could not find her insulin pen in her purse.

She then completely passed out. Totally limp, sliding out of her seat, ragdoll limp.

I started going through the steps of doing a proper fireman carry, but she managed to regain enough consciousness that I could support about 75% of her weight and she and I could sort of stumble out of the theatre into the lobby.

Set her down in the lobby, on the ground, sort of slouched kind of upright against a wall, told a staff member to call 911.

While waiting, I bought the stupidest large sized coke I’d ever purchased, told her to focus on alternating between sipping it, and breathing, while I held her upper body and head so she wouldn’t collapse and take her eye out with the straw.

… Within 10 minutes, the ambulance had not yet arrived, but she had moderately regained consciousness and composure.

By the time the ambulance did arrive, we basically all managed to figure out (as she regained more awareness) that she had a backup insulin pen in her car, the EMTs supervised its administration, and after about 45 minutes of observation, they said she was clear to go if I drove her home.

She made that decision with the EMTs, I had stepped back at that point, and I… told her I could drive her to the hospital, but she just wanted to go home, so I drove her home.

… Now, not to make light of her condition in anyway, at all, but…

… a few days later we were chatting and she said that at no point in her life (she’d had early onset diabetes, type 1, been living with it for a while) …

… at no point had anyone told her or had she realized that a stupidly massive sugary drink does apparently function decently as an emergency, last ditch, make shift sugar boost… when you are in diabetic shock… from a lack of sugar.

I realize you would not want to depend on this method as your main way of handling diabetes (for numerous, numerous reasons), but it baffled me that someone with 10+ years living with diabetes… wouldn’t know that?

Like, I know that just gulping down a huge soda potentially could have been too much sugar, but also, the paramedics were on the way, and I wasn’t forcing her to drink the whole thing, she got maybe 2/3 of the way through it and had significantly recovered, told me she thought that was enough.

    I dunno.

I’d be interested in the opinions of diabetics and people with actual medical knowledge on this.

  • Yep.

A graduated tax structure is evidently just literally too complex for about half the population to understand.

Throw ‘how is Social Security funded’ into that as well.

The top bracket is 176,000 and everything above that.

All it would take to keep Soc Sec funded is just add more brackets after that.

But nope, America is full of morons who think that their dumb ass making 40k or 80k is going to see a higher tax bill if you explicitly only additionally tax those making stupendous amounts of money.

  • I used to work for an import/export middleman company a decade ago, data analytics, db management, executive report production, etc.

    I feel your pain.

I’ve spent a decade now explaining basic economics to idiots, and my conclusion is America is doomed.

Does it matter that I have degrees in Econ and Poli Sci? Years of experience with all kinds of data analytics work?

Nope. Some idiot used car salesman has a gut feeling, some HVAC maintenance guy can’t grasp algebra.

    Therefore I am wrong.

… and now we reap what we have sewn.
