  • In the US, the western deserts are the best places. No radical weather, very predictable climate, zero tectonic activity, no natural disasters.

Force them to do closed-loop cooling, force them to bring some solar to the party, zero additional costs to other businesses and homes.

This is down to state and local people and politicians to handle. And it sounds like people are finally clueing in. And if they don’t, there are other ways to deal with such structures.

What pisses me off the most, there is no excuse for local politicians to approve these monstrosities. Usually, they’re wanting to bring tax revenues and jobs. These DCs bring neither.

  • Hate not so much for AI in and of itself, my ire is the resource use for one. We were already draining aquifers that took thousands of years to fill and now we’re burning even more for datacenters (DCs).

To top it off, America’s western deserts are the best place for DCs. No natural disasters, stable and predictable weather, tectonically inactive. Every time I’ve had to pick a primary or backup DC, I’d hit one in Las Vegas or somewhere out west. (This experience was pre-AI.)

These DCs are burning power and causing higher bills to consumers, which is just fucking obscene. States should legislate that DCs have to bring at least some of their own, dedicated renewables, and pay a premium to the power company for the extra stress and maintenance on the grid. These costs should not touch customers, residential or business.

Maybe even worse is the economic aspect. Have a look at the current Buffett Index, the ratio of the total United States stock market to GDP. We topped 200% for the first time, ever. For comparison, the Great Depression and Great Recession were around 120-130%. This “extra” stock market valuation is all due to AI speculation.

So for all the other whining lemmy does about AI, it’s the ecosystem and economic disasters it’s creating that we’ll all remember when the bubble pops.

  • Been fixing forms since I was in customer service in the 90s. Makes me mad because there’s no excuse! Job before last I was in the sole IT guy, yet I’d take the time to redo entire forms, sometimes even for clients, just so they would work right.

OK, in my IT career I’ve sometimes had an ulterior motive, needed to more easily parse their data. :)

  • Jesus. Depopulation bad, no matter the system. Fewer people producing and paying taxes, bad. Now who takes care of the non-working population, the elderly, the plain stupid, the handicapped?

We have never had to figure a way around this issue, but it’s coming, fast and hard. Japan looks first up to bat, let’s see how they navigate it.

You sound like you have it all figured out (based on what you read on social media)! Love to hear your strategy! Governments all over the planet need your input. Be the hero we all need.
