  • I don’t think we really disagree given what you said about shortsightedness, but I feel like ranting.

The focus on corporate lobbyist and billionaire donations is the cancer that will kill the country. Fundraising through grassroots outreach and organization can be much more effective than spending billions in blood money on TV ads and landline phonecalls, but it requires a platform that taps into the zeitgeist and galvanizes the public to act. In our current moment that means earnestly fighting for social programs, civil rights, and democratic governance - all of which conflicts with the interests of the ruling class.

The DNC is too far gone at this point. They’ve ignored the popular will for so long and embraced corporatism so nakedly that they enabled fascism by granting its veneer of populism more luster.

They squandered any good will they could have gained from wholeheartedly supporting popular policies and any trust they could have engendered with a consistently progressive track record. They lost any respect they could have earned from fighting tooth and nail against oppression, and any momentum they could have raised within the institution from fostering a new generation of energetic idealists. Take all that away and what you’re left with is a staid orthodoxy that is begrudged, distrusted, spineless, and out of touch.

The only thing they have to fall back on at this point is ‘not being as bad as overt fascists’ and ‘being reasonably complement stewards of an economy designed to funnel money to the wealthy’. We’ve seen that this is not a good strategy for winning elections, but does a hell of a job at driving voter apathy, powerlessness, and resentment.

Let’s return to the origin of this so that you might be able to see where the accusation of Islamophobia is coming from.

In response to someone wondering why democrats are so quick to abandon marginalized groups, you singled out Muslims to decry as authoritarian, misogynistic, homophobic, pedophilic, rape apologists.

In response to my point that we should denounce multiple negative things at once including the faults that you identified as well as Anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia - two prejudices that are intrinsically linked and were politically weaponized - you doubled down on denouncing Islam and implied that no support should be offered to Muslims.

I’m not asking you to avoid criticizing Islam as a religion, I’m asking you to see Muslims as people and recognize that they have been also marginalized and deserve justice too. Please take some time to reflect on this.

Islam is not a monolithic platonic form, it’s the ideas of the people who call themselves Muslim. As people they deserve to be free from bigotry based on their innate characteristics. If you only allow for groups to be uplifted if they’re perfect and free from sin, you will always be able to find fault and reason to continue oppression.

The pillars of patriotism in the US’s popular imagination are freedom and opportunity. It’s ridiculous to say that any invocation of patriotism is civil religion or fascism, especially when people like AOC are right to say that they’re the real patriots. Progressives need to reclaim the term because they actually do stand for the ideals that the American public thinks of when they think of patriotism. Meanwhile the GOP and power brokers at the top of the DNC are obviously enemies of the people who have embraced fascism, trample on constitutionally protected rights, and set up an economy that restricts people’s opportunity as much as possible. The contrast couldn’t be clearer and it needs to be addressed.
