The joke here is that as biological organisms, the imperative to reproduce is genuinely more important than short term food and shelter and this man is making intelligent use of his resources to fill his life’s purpose. It only looks absurd.

1·6 hours agoStoves and ranges often have high wattage hookups. They also often host electrical outlets. Seems weird there are no high speed boiling devices that exploit it.

2·4 hours agoCan I use two kettles to boil a quantity of water in half the time that one kettle will do it? And if so, why can’t I make a “double kettle”?

63·8 hours agoHumanity’s distinction is that it is aware of its own place within nature
That’s pure hubris. It’s neither evident that we DO understand our place, or that other creatures understand less well than we do. This is the sort of thing we tell ourselves for our own psychological needs, not because we have evidence that leads us to believe these things. We could quite easily “understand” a facile pretense presented to us by more fundamental layers of our own nature, crafted to bend our choices and perceptions towards those that benefit our DNA but harm individuals. Or, we could simply be wrong. There is no way to test our math.

4·8 hours agoOne of the variables is the amount of water being boiled. For a given kettle, there is a roughly linear relationship between the mass of the water and the time it takes to heat it by a degree. If I get two kettles, plug them both in, and split the water between them, then don’t I get my water boiled twice as fast? Why can’t we just put two elements in one kettle?

5·9 hours agoUK kettles boil faster than North American ones because they are plugged into 240v lines instead of 120v lines. But IIUC, you can pull the same amount of amps from either line. Why can’t we make kettles boil just as fast no matter where they are plugged in, by pulling more amps? I guess it’s the inherent resistance of the heating coil being the same? Can’t we trade something off, use more coils, “plug it in twice,” nothing??

42·4 hours agothe unification of all of humanity into one system
This seems so arbitrary. Why is there a line that perfectly encircles every single human, and no other organism? There is nothing we all share, that is not also shared by other creatures. And yet, there is essentially nothing of meaning that we do all share. This group seems either too large or too small. I think you only come to such a Goldilocks conclusion when you start there and work backwards.

1·9 hours agoWe all have fundamentally the same stupid monkey brain. Given a novel problem, we usually all make the same stupid mistakes. But it only takes a tiny factor of divergence for each of us to evolve into a totally unique system.
