If the system were set up in a way that you could actually get to the point where those “big things” were not always required, on an individual basis, it wpuld not be.

But that isn’t the world we live in. We live in one where everything needs to keep raising in cost until there is nonescape from the debt requirement for anyone. And the squeeze will happen until everyone becomes a part of the trap.

I think some of it is that the “political element” of the past became mainstream. Partly because it was a political element once.

People now, who most likely watched Trek in reruns 20 years after the fact don’t see Uhura or Chekov or the Black Flag Admiral as political, because it no lomger really was when they watched.

But then they see a gay character on modern Trek and flip out. But others just see, another character. And in 20 years, maybe no one will even think it is or realize it was polotical.

That sort of thing.

Also, for many of these people, do not underestimate the underlying religous issue. In the case of vaccines, its becomes some sort of “mark of the beast” nonsense. See also the dumb “microchips in the vaccines” stupidity.

On the hypothetical side, I think its more likely Clinton’s ACA would have pushed Gore to a decisive win, and Gore would have done something about the intel Bush was ignoring.
