OP is referring to Vulcan culture. Sarek’s displays of affection would probably not be considered “restrained” in a Vulcan-Vulcan relationship.

I don’t know if it’s correct to say that Vulcan culture is unaffectionate, just thay they don’t express affection in the way you are used to. Remember: Spock was played the way he was in the 1960s to demonstrate the distance humans are willing to go to tolerate other cultures, no matter how (literally in this case) alien.
There’s definitely a lot to unpack in suggesting that their culture deserves to “fail” because they do not assimilate (lol) into your culture.
Your points are all correct, but I feel it’s also important to remember that nobody owns and operates “Lemmy”. It’s entirely volunteer operated and while it has two full-time devs, they’re paid by donations (and not very much). There is no budget or UX/UI department to do A/B onboarding testing or anything.
What I’m saying is that if there is something you feel needs changing nobody would stop you (in fact they would welcome you!) from rolling up your sleeves and trying to address it (like @[email protected] is doing with this community)!
I honestly don’t bother with trying to explain what an “instance” is to people interested in leaving Reddit. I just say “get the app” since most users are on their phones anyway. The only time a new user needs to know about any decentralized/federation stuff is if they’re using a web browser, where, yeah, it can be confusing. But apps hide all federation stuff. Just download it, make an account, and follow communities (or people in Mastodon’s case).
Also thank you for sharing your perspective as a newbie in this community it’s very helpful!
Same. I have a hard time not pulling that slot machine wheel if it’s there. It’s nice to have a feed of just the topics I requested from the communities I know are well moderated. Despite spending less time and consuming less content I actually feel more informed.
We out here shilling for Big Lemmy
Honestly curious… what exactly are you doing in a community who’s stated goal is to evangelize the Lemmy network?
I joined what I thought was a plain simple Star Trek Website how did I end up here please someone help
“Just keep on Lemmy. It feels like Reddit did 14 years ago.”
For better or worse this really nails it. I also think it’s a good reminder that when Reddit conquered Digg it happened over a six month period because there was like 100k users maybe total. There are so many more people involved with Reddit these days it’s going to take literal years before Lemmy is anywhere near the same level in terms of MAU.
I’m not sure but the instance was started by the reddit mods I will ask and let you know
Odd how those “deeply held beliefs” are a lot less meaningful to them when there’s nobody around to make upset.
Because you can’t control human beings? I’m not entirely sure what you mean. The entire reason the structure of ActivityPub and the Fediverse is what it is, is to have moderation not controlled by a single entity. Enforced consolidation is both impossible and would defeat the purpose.
Lemmy “communities” are structurally just modified user accounts. So it seems like it could be possible for one to “re-toot” a post similarly to how it can be done on Mastodon and elsewhere.
Good Lord, didn’t anybody here build ships in bottles when they were boys?
What’s weird to me is that even after being reminded about it he carried on as if they don’t exist?
A cool feature would be to enable community mods to “retoot” posts from other communities, keeping the comments together.
This has been true for over a year now, I think the only reason that community points anywhere else is because a majority of them already moved to Lemmy instances.
Sarek felt that he could have demonstrated more affection towards his human wife in a way that was meaningful to her. That is not the same thing as saying that Vulcan culture is unaffectionate, or that other Vulcans would consider Sarek as not affectionate.
