Every study on the subject has found conversion therapy to be ineffective at best, and devastatingly harmful to children. There’s no legitimate right to harm your children with zealotry.
The “Parents’ Rights” folks don’t care. They want to have absolute control over their children in their childhood, want to have a “last word” on their adulthood business, and are extremely offended when someone does parenting differently from them.
They see children as their property. Many of them still think that way even into the child’s adult life.
Sadly most of them will die alone, because that socially maladaptive behavior is almost never limited to their relationships with their children. They tend to view their friends as possessions too, and eventually every friend knows.
Do we really need to bother pretending we don’t already know what this court is going to say? They’ll vote for it 6-3, and thousands of kids are going to be forced into this torture by their bigoted parents. It’s disgusting, and I hope these justices are haunted to their graves by their inhumanity.
The justices don’t face enough protests for their selfish partial rulings.
Many parents sincerely believe that being transgender is purely a choice and that there are no transgender people simply people who believe that they are trans because they work themselves up.
As such, parents believe that conversion therapy is the option to stop kids from being trans and so they can have a ‘normal life’ with their grandkids.
The Christian faith is also a strong force in perpetuating this. Since the Bible tenuously condemns transgender people, many Christians believe that being trans is similar to being addicted to alcohol and not inherent to a person. A chemical dependency on something that can be solved through therapy and hard work.
This is the thing I’m fighting my dad over and it might ruin our relationship. Science shows that gender identity is an inherent part of a person. I can trace aspects of my gender identity back to the third grade. I’m now 24
I still haven’t told basically any of my family besides my mother (who I live with) because of how conservative most of them are. Yet I’ve been called my chosen name by coworkers and bosses and going to the store in makeup and holding my purse for more than 8 months now.
