For example most fighting games and arcade beat 'em ups I go leverless with my keyboard. For 2D platformers I like to use a d-pad. Then for 3D games I usually go to my 360 knock off controller.
I recently started playing old tank control style games in the vein of Resident Evil with my keyboard and it works surprisingly well. Old Tomb Raider also plays well with the kb set up.

Yeah some games are just meant for certain peripherals it’s baked into the gameplay design. Big reason like you said why I can’t do fps games on a controller.
