People going into debt to buy groceries was a thing back in the great depression. Grocery chain Safeway is named that because it was “safe” and didn’t sell food on credit.

      Lol it’s true

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safeway

The point of the Safeway name was that the grocery operated exclusively on a cash-and-carry basis – it did not offer credit to customers, as American grocers traditionally had done. It was the “safe way” to buy food because a family could not get into debt via its grocery bill (as many families did at the time, a contributing cause of the Great Depression in the United States). Thus, the original slogan was: “Drive the Safeway. Buy the Safeway”.

get into debt via its grocery bill (as many families did at the time, a contributing cause of the Great Depression in the United States).

Oh boy here we go guys, Great Depression 2: electric billaloo!
