The 83-year-old progressive icon took the stage ahead of indie pop artist Clairo’s performance to deliver a fiery speech, where he raged against President Donald Trump, corporate greed and the billionaire class.
A couple things:
1). I lowkey expect Coachella to have a pretty good % pretentious rich folk (Trust Fund Babies) who this ain’t gonna resonate with from an old white dude.
2). I kinda would have expected AOC instead of Bernie to maybe connect with the younger folk better? But the article says she’s trying to reach Neil Young fans? Why aren’t these roles reversed?
Spot-on re: 1. When I saw that I thought, “why fucking bother with these people?” Don’t Coachella/Burning Man/SXSW demographics comprise primarily techbros and other guillotine fodder nowadays?
Go, go Bernie! He is old enough to deserve to yell at clouds all day, but he chooses to keep fighting. Do we even deserve politicians this good?
I mean… we do deserve politicians that good. And he’s one of a single-digit handful that exist in the US, and that fact is kind of fucking tragic.
Ahh so we deserve even more like this? Yeah, I am starting to feel entitled to being represented by my government and I plan to be a straight-up jerk about it until I get that.
There are so many who feel just as optimistically outraged, fellow citizen. I’m talking dozens, here!
I have called numerous politicians of our feckless opposition to scream a copious plethora of obscure and innovative profanity at them while expressing how deeply they have in the past, and are now continuing to - in the face of a fucking fascist takeover that they enabled - fuck me and my generation over.
Don’t forget to breathe. They’d prefer you did.
My mission statement is That if you don’t feel represented, run for election yourself
uh…
We deserve them, but the democrats don’t.
Does anyone know how the crowd reacted? I mean except the mentioned boing (also like 10 out of several k were boing or more like 50%?)?
“Play ‘Green New Deal’!!!”
Even more surprising: he took the stage not to speak, but to play bitchin’ dueling guitar solos with Tom Morello for an hour.
Plot twist, Morello just kept time while Bernie lit both up.
i seem to have put myself right in the cross fire between a troll and others, so allow me to defend myself: I have no idea about US politics, and only started to, well, get more informed in it after the most recent election.
I see that there is a Bernie Sanders website linked in the comments, but I was just wanted to hear from you guys why Bernie Sanders is so well regarded.
Sanders is a rare voice for progressive, prosocial reform in the US. His policy positions resonate with many of us who feel that government should support ordinary people at least as much as the obscenely wealthy.
But beyond that, he’s genuine and his messaging has been consistent for decades. You can literally find images of him being arrested fighting for social justice in the 60’s.
Also he’s sharp and nearly every time he makes a point he drops the facts to support it.
In a very long career, he has never stopped advocating for the working folks of all races, creeds, and colors.
That’s pretty much it.
He had very consistently been on the side of improving life for people. He’s thinks that people deserve to eat and to have a place to live and to receive medical care. He thinks that the government should generally allow people to do what they want if it’s not hurting others.
He had rarely deviated from that and to my knowledge has never deviated from that for Americans.
He may be the last honest politician left in the US.
He has been in politics for over 50 years, always with the same popular platform that advocate for the working class especially free healthcare and a livable wage. He does not take money from big corporations and has the highest approval rating of anyone in Congress.
