Something about the way the second map is cropped and colored made it really hard to read for some reason. It took my brain ages to realize what it was

Oregon has a coast, so it must be near the sea. What the fuck is Idaho? Why do you have two Kansases? Why is everything a square???

Kansas is named for the Kansa Nation that already lived in the area when early American explorers arrived.
Arkansas is pronounced like Arkansaw, silent s at the end. It is apparently the French spelling of an Algonquian word for the Quapaw people, completely unrelated to Kansas.

Because by the time the colonizers made it west of the Mississippi, they were so tired of figuring out logical boundaries such as “geographical features” and “which people already live in which regions” so they decided to take the lazy way out and slice up half of the continent like a sheet cake.
We keep a backup Kansas because of the ever present threat of tornadoes that serve as conduits to an alternate dimension run by a carnival huckster.
We are currently in the alternate dimension.
I also wouldn’t be able to tell you much from a US map. Seems like you recognize more than I would

We need them because we’re dumb and our system is dumb and if we didn’t have those duplicates the Liberals™ might dominate national politics.
I had problems with it too.
I saw the Mediterranean as land until I saw Italy and Spain.
