I really do wish I hadn’t decided to boycott USAnal goods over two decades ago. I haven’t got anything left to react with when I see these escalating atrocities.

May I suggest ad blocking, both in physical mail and internet. Put a no flyers sticker on your mailbox, I am guessing all of the US companies are advertising heavily in Canada. I have a pihole setup on my home network and then I can VPN into my home to block ads, I used to pay for YouTube premium to avoid the ads that my pihole could not block, but I stopped paying for that and started using Unwatched to block ads. I wish there was a better way then patreon to send money to the Canadian talent I watch but oh well I guess.

I cancelled my TV service because I did not want to pay for the US channels, but I did start paying for CBC Gem, it is not like I was not already getting all the shows ad free with my pihole but I can now see the news if I so care to. I want a way to pay for TSN, but only for CFL. I am sailing the high C’s for new US based TV shows, I am not going to give Canadian channels any attention for those shows so that they do not pick them up for another season and hopefully future content is made in Canada.

I moved my blog from a US host with a .com TLD to a Canadian host with a .ca TLD, I got a package with the ability to create unlimited email addresses, I used to use apple’s hide my email so that I could just turn off an address if it got spammy. My new host is less expensive than my new host, so I get the ability to create unlimited emails practically for free. It is amazing how much junk mail I do not get as my email addresses are not seen as sellable to advertisers (the format goes webpage name.randomwordandthreerandomnumbers@my address.ca). Advertisement is big business, that is owned mostly by Google and a few other companies online at least.

I want a way to get my iPhone and iPad replaced with something that is not from Apple or relies on Google but that costs money, money I do not have. I am trying to de-apple my iPad and iPhone as much as I can by replacing apps. My home lab runs on a fork of Debian, sure it is from the US but it is FOSS (Debian is but I guess the fork is from Europe as is the raspberry pi?), and if I need to reinstall the OS for whatever reason I make sure to remove all the google things. I have changed my web browser of choice away from Safari, and Chrome is automatically removed from everything if I find it, it has been changed to Vivaldi and my search engine has been changed from whatever the heck I was using after I started de-googling to Ecosia. Ecosia relies on the Google for its search results but I have read that they are getting away from that?

There is so much US stuff we use on a daily basis that we do not even notice, there is so much US stuff that uses us on a daily basis that we do not even notice. My father has a hard time giving up US stores because they employ Canadians, I realize it will hurt the economy in the short term but as the US is pushed out Canadian stores will come and replace those places but only if we stay strong.

Shout out to the Pihole team!

For those that may not know, a pihole is a whole “home” adware/malware/spyware blocker. It runs on a raspberry Pi but can also run on a physical/virtual install of several different Linux distributions. Not only can it block ads on your computer but can also block ads on technology that you can’t (easily) block ads on (“Smart” TV / stock cellphone / IoT devices / etc). In addition, with some easy to instal additional (free) software you can block ads even when not at “home”!

Which part of “boycott USAnal goods over two decades ago” wasn’t clear?

There is currently zero US presence in my life (outside of one vestigial one that is on the queue for replacement). This is rendered simpler for me by not being currently resident in Canada, to be fair.

I moved my Mastodon, Pixelfed, and Lemmy servers to ones outside the USA. I have been running ad blocking software since before it was cool (because Internet ads drive me up the wall with their clumsiness). I don’t use American company web products: no Google Docs, Google Mail, Google Translate, Bing, MS Office, etc. The closest thing I have to something American left in my life is that my Honor phone is based on Android (albeit very heavily modified), but that will change when my phone reaches EOL. My next phone will run HarmonyOS.

Something tells me that the orange rump is just going through the different tickers and or commodities saying something so the price will go down and then change his mind and the price goes back up. Profit made.
