The SSD part was predominantly for hosting music production sample libraries and instrument data (so, lots of random small files), where quick random access over TBs of data is desirable. I’ve also got a few other use cases where having a lot of networked SSD storage is beneficial if not perhaps necessary (my RAW photo library in lightroom is another one fairly significant one that pops to mind).

For consumption media, that’s 100% going on a slower pool of spinning disks, my plan is/was a mixed media setup

I’m lucky to live somewhere where I have a selection of supermarkets that I can walk to which all stock fresh foods for reasonable prices, sounds like you’re in a similar situation.

In America they have loads of these “food deserts” (old article now, but it’s gotten worse) where the only place you can buy food without having to drive an hour, is a Dollar General store that only sells shelf stable, processed rubbish. There’s no amount of money you can spend in those towns to get anything fresh, not that the residents typically have much to spend anyway.

Those residents also can’t often afford to live anywhere else, or they’d have already moved; so they’re kinda of stuck in a situation that’ll make their lives worse with very little they can do to remediate it themselves.

Who even makes decent SATA SSDs now Crucial & Samsung are out? I’ve got a NAS I was planning to build in the next year or so that made heavy use of SATA SSDs. Looks like Western Digital seem to be the one big company still going for now (and frankly I’d have never picked them over Crucial or Samsung)

Looks like Kioxia make some too (I thought they only did server stuff) but not in big capacities

You need to ensure a government can exert power over the largest organisations in its country. If that ever becomes an issue, the organisation might start behaving as a de facto government of its own and start treating the actual government as a vassal.

Basically we need to kick corporatist politicians out of our governments before they finish rolling out the red carpet for the end of democracy, and start chopping up and/or nationalising these proto-megacorps. If only a few control the tools that put us all out of work, we’re not getting anything close to utopia.

This feels pretty hard to enforce, are they gonna let people self select what they provide or are they perhaps going to give a list of services to give accounts for? The latter would have me looking either like a ghost that disappeared about 7 years ago (for most public social media) or one that disappeared about 3 years ago (if Reddit is included)

Hmm, well the latter part is still standard monitor controls (contrast, brightness, colour temperature)

For the former, limiting how fast brightness can change would effectively be the same as a poor pixel response time. This tends to manifest as image ghosting past a certain point and is usually seen as pretty undesirable given it means you lose a lot of detail around anything in motion

You’re describing image contrast, high contrast pushes the pixel intensity out to the extremes (black & white), low contrast pushes it to the middle* (grey).

I’m pretty sure every monitor I’ve ever used has a setting for it, which is about as close to the end of the pipeline as you’re going to get.

*The brightness setting means it might not actually be a middle grey
