Porter, a former consumer protection attorney, enters a crowded field that Kamala Harris may eventually enter
If Harris enters the race, “there are very few politicians who would want to take her on”, said Jack Pitney, a Claremont McKenna College political scientist. “She’d be likely to win the Democratic nomination, and Democrats are likely to win the governorship.”
As a result Cali voters would get zero say in who their governor is…
They’d be stuck with one substantially more conservative than Cali has been even under Newsom. And she’s not a shoe in. Running a candidate that voters don’t want leads to losses in easy elections. Even if it wins the top of the ticket, depressed turnout leads to down ballot losses across the ballot.
Fuck any candidate that steps aside if Kamala announced, a healthy primary increases dem turnout in the general, and more importantly forces candidates to cater towards just dem voters during the primary. If that doesn’t happen, they just feel pressured to move right in the general.
Kamala didn’t win much support from CA when she ran for president. It’s not likely that she will be the shoe-in the pundits imagine.
They think the party will put their thumb on the scale.
