On Feb. 28, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to be “thankful” and that he was “gambling with WWIII” during a meeting at the Oval Office. Their meeting was the latest exchange between the two leaders as the U.S. largely shifted its policy toward the Russia-Ukraine war.

The policy shift — and the rumors that spread about Zelenskyy at the same time — caused us to take a look back at our fact checks about the Ukrainian president. Some of the topics include a rumor that Zelenskyy blocked Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, in Ukraine (false), the claim that he purchased a casino in Cyprus (false), and reports that he said he would “exchange” the Russian city of Belgorod for NATO membership (true).
